Founded by Alfonso X el Sabio on 1255
on place called "Pozo de Don Gil", acquires soon its Carta
Puebla (the license of occupation made by the king), so
it´s called "Villa Real", that is Royal Village.
This city is founded to try to limitate
the power of the military orders of this zone, particulary
the Calatrava´s Order. The city borns with 130 towers and
6 doors open to the nearest cities. Nowadays, you can visit
only one of them, Toledo´s Door.
The city grows because of its textil
industries, leather, and its appreciated wine, and because
of the interest of Catolic Kings for making this place
to be the administrative center of the south of Spain.
The Inquisition Tribunal was at Ciudad Real from 1483 to
1485, when it was moved to Toledo.
The constant growth of its services,
opening of new malls, construction of houses and the construction
of the Don Quijote Airport means that Ciudad Real has an
important increment of population yearly.
