You can find Calatrava Castle at Aldea
del Rey, a town near Almagro, build on a hill called "Alacranejo".
Is close to Salvatierra Castle, and
between them goes one of the most important natural ways
to get across Sierra Morena and arrive to Guadalquivir
Valley.
The "Orden del Cister" took posession
of this castle on the XII Century, and founded on 1198
the "Orden de Calatrava", an ancient warriors group, that
would defend this castle against the attacks of the arabs.
Calatrava Castle has three different
parts, on a extension of over 46.000 square metres. The
first one is the castle, which includes a ancient church.
The second one surrounds the castle, going down the hill,
creating its first defence line. The third one is a parallel
way to the second to make harder the access to the castle
to enemies.
